- The idea behind this ICA Commission goes back to 2005. It is based on the recognition of the fact that the rapid deployment of digital information and communication technologies (ICT) is influencing a manifold of issues related to Cartographic Heritage in the large, interesting not only specialists but also the general public.
- In principle, the focus is on any specific ICT topic which interacts potentially with issues related to the heritage of cartography and maps. The ambition is to enrich the concept of Cartographic Heritage by attracting new audiences and potential operators in this field who are interested in the implementation of relevant digital technologies.
- It was in 2005 that the idea to introduce such a field in the structure of ICA was presented by Evangelos Livieratos during the International Cartographic Conference held in La Coruña, Spain. The proposal was supported by the ICA President (P) and Secretary General (SG) at that time Milan Konečný and Ferjan Ormeling and a Working Group on Digital Technologies in Cartographic Heritage was introduced with E. Livieratos the Chair. The 2007 ICA General Assembly held in Moscow, Russia [Milan Konečný (P), Ferjan Ormeling (SG)] decided the upgrate of this WG to the status of Commission under the same name and the 2011 ICA General Assembly held in Paris, France [William Cartwright (P), David Fairbairn (SG)] reaffirmed this Commission for one more term.
- In 2015 the ICA General Assembly held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil [Georg Gartner (P), László Zentai (SG)] decided to have the Commission for one more term (2015-2019) under the new name Cartographic Heritage into the Digital, reconfirming Evangelos Livieratos as the Commission Chair.
