Professor Boutoura's main fields of research in digital cartography is map production and map use with particular interest in map content, map projections, map deformation analysis, relief design and shading
Since the mid 1990s, she organized the operational flows in the field of the digital transformation and best fitting techniques on historic maps, for comparative studies and the analysis of their geometric content and the research on the implied deformations
She worked on the deformation analysis of portolan maps and the comparison of old maps with new counterparts, based on georeference processes
Recent research activities include the web providing systems of digital map libraries and map archives. See here
