Cartographic research started at the AUTH School of Rural and Surveying Engineering in 1980 with the then newly established Chair of Higher Geodesy and Cartography. CartoGeoLab continues the 35 years legacy in advancing the foundamental research in general, thematic, mathematical and digital cartography developed since then.

The main topics of reaserch are summarised in the following items:

• map reading and cartographic quality evaluation
• map projections and deformation metric analysis of the geometric map content
• thematic cartography, symbolic representations and spatiotemporal cartographic analysis
• cartographic relief and shading
• homogenising issues in deriving new optimised map content from existing inhomogeneous material
• map production chain to the map printing output
• tactile mapping for the visually impaired
• cartographic implementation in archaeology and cultural issues
• mapping the enviromental sounds
• geographic analysis and statistical implementation in regional spatial studies
• cartography and maps in educating children, teachers and the general public
• theoretical and applied topics in cartographic heritage, in the the study and comparative analysis of old maps
• interactive topics in map and geoinformation curatorship, map keeping and web map providing

A special concern was developed and it is advancing for the research on:

• the ancient Greek cartography, especially on Ptolemy's Geographia and its cartographic contexts [>Geographia plus]
• the Greek cartographic enlightenment with emphasis on the Righas Velestinlis Charta and the Anthimos Gazis Pinax and Atlas [>Kozani project 2008-2010]
• the 19th centrury cartography, maps and mapping relevant to the creation and the advancement of the modern Greek state
