Since 1979 professor of Higher Geodesy and Cartography at the faculty of Rural and Surveying Engineering, AU Thessaloniki. Graduated in rural and surveying engineering from the National Technical University of Athens (TU Athens) in 1970. Doctor of Engineering, TU Athens (1974) and Doctor of Philosophy, Uppsala University (1976). Docent at TU Athens (1978).

Associated in teaching and research with the TU Athens, where he gave courses in geodesy and cartography (physical geodesy and thematic cartography, 1978) and with research institutions and universities at the USA (Cambridge, Mass), Sweden (Uppsala), Germany (Munich, Stuttgart), Netherlands (Delft) and Italy (Trieste, Bologna, Venice). Fellowships from the Smithsonian Research Foundation, the Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung, the Swedish National Research Foundation, the Italian Geodetic Commission and the Delft UT Research Council. Fellow of the International Association of Geodesy in 1991. Since 1979 at the AU Thessaloniki he gave courses in ellipsoidal geodesy, physical geodesy, theory of geodesy, general cartography, thematic cartography and mathematic cartography. He offered courses in cartography at the AUTh faculty of education at Florina and at the faculty of architecture, University of Thrace. Member of the directive committee of the TU Crete (1982-85). Elected member of the Bureau of the Council of Europe's Higher Education and Research Committee (1998-2002).

Founder of the Hellenic Cartographic Society (1994) and of the National Centre for Maps and Cartographic Heritage - National Map Library (1997). Designer and head of the Council of Europe supported seminars project for in-service training programme for European teachers on The use of maps, modern cartographic technology and the www in teaching History (2000-2003). Since 2005 is the Chair of the International Cartographic Association Working Group (ICA Commission from 2007) on Digital Technologies in Cartographic Heritage. Organizer of the international series of workshops Digital approaches to cartographic heritage (2006: Museum of Byzantine Culture, Thessaloniki; 2007: Hellenic National Research Foundation, Athens; 2008: Institut Cartogrāfic de Catalunya, Barcelona; 2009: Universitā IUAV di Venezia, Venice; 2010: Technische Universität Wien, Vienna; 2011: Nationaal Archief, The Hague). Founding editor of the International Web Journal e-Perimetron for Sciences and Technologies Affined to History of Cartography and Maps (2006). Director of the editorial project Trips with maps in places (topoi) and non-places (utopoi) from 2007. Head of the project (2008-2010) for the organization and implementation of the Municipal Map Library of Kozani sponsored by the Municipality of Kozani, the Municipal Library of Kozani and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki

Currently teaches evolution of mapping sciences and technologies and non-conventional cartography (undergraduate courses) and the use of cartography and maps in the history of geographic expansion (post-graduate seminar).
