Established in 1997 as a non-profit, self-governed and self-financed public institution under private law. It is supervised by the Ministrer of Macedonia-Thrace for budgetary issues only. A five-member Board administrates the functions and the operation of the Centre.
The Centre's main concern is the development and diffusion of Cartography and Maps in Culture, Education, Production and Everyday life and also the development and management of a Map Library and the implementation of new information and communication digital technologies in order to satisfy the Centre's overall aims and perspectives.
National and international cooperation supports and integrates the work of the Centre. Publications -in printed and electronic format- map exhibitions, seminars and relevant activities are the tools used for spreading the educational, cultural, social and everyday-life dimension of Cartography and Maps.
